History of Meadowmere Place
Meadowmere Place traces its origins to William Howard Johnson, an influential Springfield developer responsible for platting several of the city’s early residential additions. Johnson purchased the land in 1904 and developed Meadowmere Place two years later, in 1906.
He is also credited with designing the still-standing pergolas and stone posts that help define the neighborhood’s distinctive sense of arrival. Originally used as gates to help contain farm animals, these stone features are now part of the lasting charm of Meadowmere Place. Their craftsmanship also reflects a broader Ozarks building tradition, where native stone was used not only for houses, but for walls, gateposts, and subdivision markers.
The setting itself is deeply tied to Springfield’s early residential and recreational history. In 1906, Springfield’s first country club was formed in the area bounded by Meadowmere Place, Portland Street, Delaware Street, and Glenstone Avenue. The landscape once included a neighborhood lake and open grounds that reflected the area’s early character as a residential retreat just beyond the city’s denser core.
By the late 1920s and 1930s, that landscape began to change: the lake was drained, the country club was gone, and Fassnight Creek was eventually buried underground. What remains today is one of Springfield’s most distinctive historic residential enclaves.
